Pizza and Social Justice (P&SJ) will celebrate its fifth anniversary by holding a free pizza meet ‘n’ greet followed by a screening and discussion of The Long Shadow, the film featured at its 2018 public debut. The documentary traces director Frances Causey’s family legacy of white supremacy and privilege.
A year earlier, founders Nancy and Adrian McKee began hosting potlucks at their Glen Ellyn home to discuss racial injustice, a hot topic. Growing attendance necessitated ordering pizza, finding a larger space, and naming the group whose goal was—and still is—to build a society free of racism and discrimination through conversation and learning.
The initial event shaped the format: pizza, introductions and announcements, short video/talk, break-out sessions to discuss reactions, reconvene for closing takeaways—all in a nonpartisan, judgment-free environment. Do-it-yourself P&SJ assistance is available to anyone wanting to facilitate a session.
In 2022, P&SJ became an Illinois 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
The organization has held four annual Storytime Events featuring books on diversity, race unity, racism, and antiracism for children and teens.
The public is invited to celebrate this leg of P&SJ’s journey.
